A little bit of my car history, thoughts and dream cars
I was recently approached by a company that offers car finance for my opinion on cars and the car I first owned, so I thought many of you may find interesting, and I’d love to hear your stories about your first car, and cars you now own and what you think? What car/s would you like to own and why?
.
First car: What your first car was, any interesting stories about driving it?
My first ever car was a 1973 Ford Fiesta (similar to the below car, but nowhere as nice).
I bought it for £250 aged 17, I think it lasted a few years. Like most boy racers it onto the closest and cheapest racetrack (the M25) for a blast. When looking back it was a rubbish car, but as a teenager I had freedom, it was liberating to have my own transport. I could now go anywhere. The car sadly had to go after a few years. When driving my grandparents to a Christmas get together, they were sitting in the back seat, I went through a massive puddle, then my Grandad complained that he felt wet, on arrive at my Aunt and Uncles house Grandad exited the car and his whole bottom was soaking, and had to borrow some trousers from my 6ft 3″ uncle, Grandad was 5ft 7″ (it was quite a sight). Some months later with the MOT was due, it failed and I was advised the car had to go to the garage in the sky, as their was so much rust underneath the car that they were surprised the car seats had not fallen through. Oh dear!
.
Current car: What are you currently driving, what do you think about it?
We have a Lexus RX400h-SE (see below, not actual car) which is the best and most reliable car I’ve ever owned, and although it’s not really me (I prefer exciting and extreme), as a family car it’s been bliss. We’ve owned the Lexus since 2006 and had no major mechanical issues at all (touch wood).
We bought an Audi Q7 in 2013 (actual car below) and we bought this over a Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery. You can see why here in an article we wrote: Land Rover Discovery, Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90? We like the Audi, but we’ve had a lot of costs involved with it. Recently we had to replace 3 alloys (as they are low profile) and this happened because a suspension arm and the electrics failed. That’s been a £3k cost. We also now have a radio button that does not work (o no radio) and pixels on the temperature screen not working. If only Lexus made a seven seater!
.
Dream car: If you had the choice, what car would you drive?
I’d love a Bizzarini 5300 GT Strada (below), rare, super cool and beautiful.
Of course there are all manner of beautiful cars, and an Aston Martin DB4 Zagato (below)
or a Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta (below) would also be a dream.
As an everyday car just for me (forsaking the kids and family needs, I’d go for a Maserati GranTurismo S or Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale (below). Stunningly beautiful, enough said!
So there you have some of my history and thoughts. Now we’d love to hear yours.
I’m in no doubt you’re right Brian. I’m no Ford Fiesta expert, and it was a long time ago. All the best.
Hi Will,
Just reading the article about your first car and i think you have the year mistaken as the Mk1 Ford Fiesta was not produced until 1976.
Kind regards Bryan
