Murray’s career began in Formula 1, where his lightweighting philosophy led to five championship-winning cars with Brabham and McLaren. He then created the legendary McLaren F1 before founding Gordon Murray Design in 2007 and, later, Gordon Murray Automotive.

At Goodwood, visitors will get a closer look at Murray’s legacy, with GMA road cars featured in the Supercar Paddock and a dedicated showcase tracing his journey from race car designer to automotive visionary. A special activation on the Cricket Pitch will also provide fans with an immersive experience, celebrating his achievements.

Goodwood and Gordon Murray: A Shared History

Murray’s connection to Goodwood dates back to the very first Festival of Speed in 1993. That year, the McLaren F1 set the second-fastest time on the Hill, and Murray’s Light Car Company Rocket made an unexpected appearance – owned by none other than George Harrison, who later drove it up the Hill himself.

More recently, GMA has used Goodwood as the stage for unveiling its bespoke supercars. The T.50 made its public debut at the 2021 Members’ Meeting, followed by the T.33 in 2022, the T.33 Spider in 2023, and the T.50s’ dynamic debut in 2024.

Pushing the Boundaries of Performance

Reflecting on his career, Professor Gordon Murray CBE stated, “For 60 years, I have enjoyed the challenge of pushing the boundaries of what’s possible – whether in racing or road cars. Our supercars today are inspired by every car I’ve designed, raced, and owned. Lightweight design, innovative materials, and cutting-edge technology are at the heart of everything we do. I am thrilled to celebrate my 60th anniversary of design at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.”

The Duke of Richmond, the driving force behind Goodwood, echoed this sentiment: “Gordon has been part of the Festival of Speed since the very beginning, and I’m delighted that he has chosen to celebrate his 60-year career with us. His name is synonymous with engineering excellence and world-class automotive design.”

Philip Lee, CEO of Gordon Murray Group, added, “GMA takes immense pride in its heritage. Gordon’s career and unique approach to design influence everything we do, from road to race cars. His focus on driving perfection continues to shape the supercars of today and those yet to come.”
