Our Review of the Goodwood Festival of Speed (2022)

IIt’s taken me much longer to get this post live due to many other commitments, but I’m glad it’s finally done. I think I probably write this every year, yet the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS) seems to always surpass the previous year, which is a great credit to all those involved in its organisation. The FoS is a great spectacle, where even someone like me that’s a bit of a car nut, attending so many car shows throughout the year, gets to see new cars and cars that I’ve only read about for the very first time. Some of those cars that stood out to me this year, that I’ve never seen before up close were:

.

Gordon Murray Automotive T50

The GMA T.50, or Gordon Murray Automotive Type 50, is a sports car manufactured by Gordon Murray Automotive. Moreover, designed by Gordon Murray and inspired by the McLaren F1, the T.50 is powered by an all-new bespoke 3,994 cc (4.0 L) naturally aspirated V12 engine developed by Cosworth. Unsurprisingly, the £2.4m (+ taxes) price tag is nuts.

.

Mercedes-AMG One

The Mercedes-AMG One (R50, stylized as ONE) is a limited-production plug-in hybrid sports car manufactured by Mercedes-AMG, featuring Formula One-derived technology. It was unveiled at the 2017 International Motor Show Germany by Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 driver Lewis Hamilton and Head of Mercedes-Benz Dieter Zetsche.

On June 1 2022, Mercedes-AMG revealed the production version of the AMG One. Production of the car began in August 2022.  Looked a cool car, again shame about the price, at £2.2m. That’s another car just for the super rich.

.

Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX

I really really liked the look of this car. The Vision EQXX – a fully operational saloon raised eyebrows earlier in the year when it was driven from Mercedes’ development centre in Stuttgart, Germany, to the company’s design studio in Nice, France, a distance of 626 miles, on a single battery charge at an average speed of 54.3mph. In the process, the one-off concept, whose charging port was sealed, achieved average consumption of 8.7kWh per 100km. What’s more, it’s claimed to have arrived in Nice with more than 87 miles of range remaining. Very cool. If this is the future, the future looks bright. However, like most concept cars, because it’s a test bed and it’s unlikely a car that looks like this and performers like this will be seen any time soon for consumers to buy.

.

Polestar 0₂

What a beautiful looking car. Polestar 0₂  is an roadster EV. It is a concept that could join the Polestar range in 2025, and I hope it does. It’s a concept car for now, but the Polestar 02 will become the Polestar 6 in 2026. ‘Our portfolio in the future will be a mix of electric SUVs, fastbacks and cars like the 02 roadster,’ CEO Thomas Ingenlath told CAR at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. ‘It’s not a flying saucer – it is an aspiration for us to get this type of product in our portfolio.’

.

Polestar Precept Concept

We saw this car originally in 2021 and it grabbed our attention again in 2022, we like the beautiful interior and suicide doors.

.

We always strive to attend the show on the Sunday for sure, so that we can watch the competitive Sunday shootout to see who can get up the hill the fastest. After all it is called the Festival of Speed. I’m sure those who attended on the Sunday will long remember the winning run by Max Chilton in the all British McMurty engineering car. Even watching the video back (see below) the car looks unreal fast, as though someone has sped the video up a little (a lot). However, I can assure you that seeing it up close live it was unbelievable. It was Like the car was glued to the ground.

The 2022 McMurtry Spéirling Prototype – Goodwood Edition, can do 0-60 mph : Under 1.5 seconds, has a mass of under 1000 kg, downforce @ 0 mph : 2000 kg, downforce @ 150 mph : 2250 kg. Wonderful engineering.

Special acknowledgement goes to any driver giving their car (the car they are driving, as the car will rarely be owned by the driver) full beans, bravery to the max. Drive of the day for me is shared between Max Chilten (above) in the McMurtry (a record breaker) and Aam Smalley whose drive was on the very edge, driving a Porsche GT3 Cup (see below at 28:50) and got all the spectators clapping. Check out his drive below.

.

The Cartier Style Et Luxe it’s a personal favourite feature of mine. Very often you get to see unique cars, bespoke cars, rare cars and I always find this an amazing and fascinating experience. This year like in other years I’ve put together a top 10 cars that got my attention most. You can check out that article here and many other top tens that I’ve created over the years here.

Conclusion

Any car stand out to you the most? The car above hit me hard. What a car. I have never seen this car before, but what a beauty, this is the 1932 Bucciali TAV8-32 V12 ‘Fleche d’Or’ (above).

That’s enough for now. We loved the show and now look forward to the Goodwood Revival. Maybe we will see you there.
