Great British Driving Roads – Macclesfield to Buxton

Thank you to Stuart of MotoringSpy.co.uk for allowing us to summarise his great series on Great British Driving Roads.  Here we look at Macclesfield to Buxton.  Please let our readers have your views once you have driven this road.  Is it a 10 out of 10?  Driving nirvana or not?

Great British Driving Roads - Macclesfield To Buxton

The road in question is the A537 taking us from Macclesfield to Buxton.

A 12 mile stretch of road, which cuts through an area of dramatic scenery, popular with both tourists and bikers. The road is affectionately known as the “cat and fiddle” by locals as you’ll find England’s second highest pub at the summit.  Nice, for a pit stop, but obviously no drinking and driving.

Leaving Macclesfield and heading east along the A537 you climb towards the Peak District town of Buxton. As you climb towards the moorlands you’ll encounter several hairpin bends and a series of glorious views over the Cheshire plain.

But despite this rugged beauty, the A537 has been classified as one of Britain’s most dangerous roads. Tight corners, a 50mph speed limit, exposure to bad weather and the occasional stray sheep mean that it requires both your total respect and 100% concentration.

It’s best to avoid this road during peak times and Sundays as it can be busy with coaches and other recreational drivers. But if you’re fortunate enough to catch this road at the right time, in the right car it will wash away all your motoring related irritations and remind you of how good it can be to drive.

If you drive this Great British Driving Road let us know what you think?  Enjoy.
