Reasons Goodwood’s 2026 Ford GT Reunion Will Be One Of Motorsport’s Greatest Moments

Goodwood is set to deliver one of its most significant motorsport moments in years. In 2026, the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard and the Goodwood Revival will reunite the three Ford GT Mk II cars that claimed an historic 1-2-3 finish at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Even better, these cars will not sit silently on display. They will run.

For the first time in a decade, all three machines will appear together and take to the track, marking the 60th anniversary of one of racing’s most influential victories.

A Result That Changed Motorsport History

The 1966 Le Mans result reshaped global endurance racing. It also ended Ferrari’s dominance at the Circuit de la Sarthe and confirmed Ford as a serious force in international competition.

The three cars involved were driven by:

  • Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon
  • Ken Miles and Denny Hulme
  • Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson

Each played a key role in Ford’s breakthrough success after years of effort, investment and rivalry.

That rivalry remains central to the story today.

The exact cars that crossed the line in formation will return to life at Goodwood:

  • Chassis P/1046
  • Chassis P/1015
  • Chassis P/1016

All three will run up the famous Hillclimb at the 2026 Festival of Speed. The timing could not be more fitting. The event’s theme, “The Rivals – Epic Racing Duels”, celebrates motorsport’s greatest showdowns.

Few rivalries had greater impact than Ford and Shelby American versus Ferrari.

Later in the year, the story continues.

In September 2026, the same cars will reunite again at the Goodwood Revival. This time, they will run on the historic Motor Circuit, surrounded by period dress, classic paddocks and authentic racing atmosphere.

For many visitors, this will be a once-in-a-generation experience.

Voices Behind the Celebration

The Duke of Richmond CBE DL welcomed the announcement, highlighting its importance to Goodwood’s heritage:

“The 1966 Le Mans result is one of the defining moments in motorsport history. To see these three Ford GT Mk IIs running together again will be incredibly special. We are grateful to all those who have helped make this reunion possible.”

Aaron Shelby, board member of Carroll Shelby International and grandson of Carroll Shelby, also reflected on the wider legacy:

“The rivalry between Ford, Shelby and Ferrari shaped the future of Shelby American. The 1966 race still resonates today and continues to influence motorsport culture worldwide.”
