How will the petrol and diesel ban work?

What has been said?

The recent announcement from Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, that new cars and vans powered wholly by petrol and diesel will not be sold in the UK from 2030, will obviously change the motor industry forever. It is worth clarifying that the announcement added that some hybrids would still be allowed.

It is part of the Government’s so-called “green industrial revolution” strategy to tackle climate change and create jobs in industries such as nuclear energy. To read the full announcement from the Government, and see their 10-point plan, click here (BBC website).

My thoughts

Let’s be 100% clear I am big on recycling, have a vegan diet as much as possible, have a strong disdain for anything that is bad for the planet and everything that lives on it.  I’m by no means a Greta Thunberg, but I strongly believe governments worldwide should be doing more to reduce humanity’s negative effects on the planet. Is banning petrol and diesel cars in the UK going to be massive for the planet? What about China’s coal plants? 

Since 2000, the world has doubled its coal-fired power capacity to around 2,045 gigawatts (GW) after explosive growth in China and India. A further 200GW is being built and 300GW is planned.

The UK, according to this article, is 1% of global emissions, China is 28% and USA 15% of global Co2 emissions. What are they doing about it?

Personally, I feel petrol should stay, as it’s my only environmentally unfriendly vice.  I’ve driven electric cars and they give me no satisfaction due to lack of noise, and being dictated to again on what I am or am not allowed to do, infuriates me. I also doubt that the infrastructure can be in place to charge cars outside every home in the UK.

My predictions

• I think that petrol cars will become more desirable in the next 10-20 years, partly down to nostalgia
• There will be a wild send off for Petrol and Diesel cars prior to the ban?
• There will be chaos from confusion as to whether people can import petrol cars from countries that do not have a ban?

Although, we have already seen some cracking electric supercars having been launched in the last 12 months, with many of the major high-end manufacturers including electric variants in their future line-ups. Time will tell.
