Powerful Upgrades That Make the Lotus Emira 420 Sport Better Than Ever

Lotus has pulled the covers off what is arguably the most focused Emira yet. The Lotus Emira 420 Sport, in particular, sits proudly at the top of the range, bringing more power, less weight and greater aerodynamic efficiency to the brand’s acclaimed sports car.

Developed at Lotus’ famous Hethel headquarters in Norfolk, the Emira 420 Sport has been created for drivers who want even more precision, performance and involvement from every mile.

The figures certainly catch the eye. With 420PS on tap, a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 186mph, this latest Emira is not short on pace.

However, as with every Lotus, there is far more to the story than outright speed.

More Power, Less Weight, Greater Rewards

At the heart of the Emira 420 Sport sits a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 420PS and 500Nm of torque.

Meanwhile, power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering rapid shifts and stronger in-gear acceleration.

Lotus has also focused heavily on reducing weight. When fitted with the optional Lightweight Handling Pack, the Emira 420 Sport sheds 25kg compared with the Emira Turbo.

That may not sound dramatic on paper, but weight reduction has always been central to Lotus philosophy. Less mass means sharper responses, improved agility and a more connected driving experience.

Lightweight Handling Pack Highlights

The optional package includes:

  • Two-way adjustable Multimatic dampers
  • Titanium sports exhaust
  • Lightweight lithium-ion battery
  • Carbon fibre exterior components
  • Lotus Track Performance app for lap timing and performance analysis

Together, these upgrades create a car that feels more alert and responsive both on road and circuit.

Aerodynamic Improvements Inspired by Motorsport

To enhance performance further, the Emira 420 Sport benefits from a comprehensive aerodynamic overhaul designed to improve cooling and stability without increasing drag.

Several subtle yet effective changes have been made throughout the bodywork.

Key Aerodynamic Upgrades

  • Redesigned front splitter
  • Revised front air vents
  • Extended side sills
  • Larger air intakes
  • Rear lip spoiler
  • New louvred tailgate

The results are impressive.

Lotus claims airflow to the outer radiators has increased by 15 per cent, while the central radiator receives 14 per cent more airflow. Brake cooling improves by 10 per cent, and airflow through the exhaust valve rises by 30 per cent.

These improvements help maintain consistent performance during demanding driving conditions, particularly during extended track sessions.

Better still, the changes have been integrated neatly into the Emira’s design, with subtle nods to legendary Lotus models of the past, including the iconic Esprit Turbo.

Chassis Upgrades Deliver Even Sharper Handling

Lotus has built its reputation on creating cars that communicate with the driver. Accordingly, the Emira 420 Sport continues that tradition.

The chassis has been revised with a ride height lowered by 5mm and suspension settings tuned specifically for the new model.

Combined with high-performance tyres, the result is improved body control and enhanced feedback.

The bonded aluminium chassis remains a key ingredient in the Emira’s success, while the double wishbone suspension setup continues to provide an excellent balance between comfort and precision.

Importantly, Lotus retains its electro-hydraulic steering system, a feature that is becoming increasingly rare in modern performance cars. As a result, it provides detailed feedback and, at the same time, helps preserve the engaging character that enthusiasts value.

A Driver-Focused Cabin with Added Carbon Fibre

Inside, the Emira 420 Sport stays true to its mission.

The cabin combines premium materials with a layout designed around the driver.

Features include:

  • 12-way electrically adjustable seats
  • Intuitive controls
  • Updated cabin technology
  • Carbon fibre gearshift paddles
  • Enhanced tactile feedback from key controls

As a result, everything has been engineered to help the driver feel more connected to the car without unnecessary distractions.

More Personalisation Than Ever Before

Buyers now have even greater scope to tailor their Emira.

An optional Carbon Fibre Exterior Pack adds lightweight carbon fibre components including:

  • Front splitter
  • Side sills
  • Wheel arch vents
  • Side pods
  • Rear spoiler
  • Diffuser surround

Wheel choice has also expanded significantly.

Owners can select from nine wheel designs and finishes, including a striking new set of 20-inch forged alloy wheels finished in satin dark grey.

New Tangelo Orange Steals the Spotlight

One of the standout additions is Tangelo Orange.

Exclusive to the Emira 420 Sport, the vibrant shade continues Lotus’ long-standing association with bold orange paint finishes. Consequently, it gives the car an unmistakable presence.

The wider colour palette now offers 16 exterior colours.

Two New Interior Packs

Lotus is also introducing two bespoke interior options.

Carbon Fibre Interior Pack

This package adds carbon fibre detailing to:

  • Driver display surround
  • Steering wheel centre spoke
  • Seat-back logo surrounds

Hand Painted Pack

Inspired by the launch colour, this option introduces Tangelo Orange highlights across:

  • Centre console
  • Steering wheel trim
  • Gear lever detailing
  • Air vent surrounds

The result is a cabin with a more bespoke and sporting appearance.

Open-Air Driving Comes to the Emira

Lotus Emira V6_SE_Removable_Roof

One of the most interesting additions is a removable tinted glass roof panel.

Available for the first time on the Emira range, the panel can be quickly removed, while also being easy to store behind the seats in a dedicated protective bag. As a result, drivers can switch easily between coupé and open-air configurations.

Meanwhile, inspired by the classic Lotus Esprit, it allows drivers to enjoy open-air motoring without compromising the car’s structural integrity or dynamic performance.

Importantly, the removable roof is available across the entire Emira range, not just the new 420 Sport.

Why the Emira 420 Sport Matters

Lotus Emira 420 Sport_Lineup

The Emira was already one of the most complete sports cars in its class. With the arrival of the 420 Sport, Lotus has refined the formula even further.

Not only does it deliver more power and less weight, but it also offers greater aerodynamic efficiency and enhanced driver engagement, making it the most focused Emira ever offered.

Crucially, Lotus has not chased performance figures alone. Every upgrade serves a purpose, whether improving cooling, sharpening handling or strengthening the connection between car and driver.

Even so, in a market increasingly dominated by technology and complexity, the Emira 420 Sport remains refreshingly faithful to the principles that made Lotus famous.

Final Thoughts

The new Emira 420 Sport appears to be everything enthusiasts hoped for: faster, lighter and more engaging, yet still usable on real roads.

As a result of its improved aerodynamics, focused chassis setup and striking design updates, it represents the most complete expression of the Emira concept to date.

Would you choose the new Emira 420 Sport over rivals from Porsche and Alpine? Does the removable glass roof make it even more appealing? And is this the finest Lotus road car currently on sale?
