History of Bugatti’s Type 35: 100 Years in the Spotlight at Salon Privé
The Bugatti Type 35, one of the most iconic and successful pre-war racing cars, is turning 100 this year. To mark this historic milestone, the Salon Privé, held at the elegant Blenheim Palace, will showcase the centenary of this legendary car. The event, presented by Aviva Private Clients, is set to be a feast for automotive enthusiasts. It will feature not only the revered Type 35, but also other masterpieces from Bugatti’s illustrious history.
An Unmatched Racing Pedigree
The Bugatti Type 35 is synonymous with success on the racetrack. Debuting at the 1924 French Grand Prix, this car quickly became a dominant force in motorsport. It racked up over 1,000 race victories, including five consecutive wins at the Targa Florio. Its triumphs were not just due to its power but also its remarkable engineering. The Type 35’s lightweight construction, with a chassis that featured a forged and hollowed front axle and cast alloy wheels, contributed to its agility and speed.
Engineering Excellence
Under the bonnet, the Type 35 housed a two-litre, straight-eight engine, renowned for its durability and performance. The crankshaft, running in needle and roller bearings, allowed the engine to reach 6000rpm, producing 75hp in its initial form. Over the years, the Type 35 evolved, with the ultimate version, the Type 35 B, boasting a supercharged 2.3-litre engine that delivered 140hp and a top speed of 133mph.
A Special Example: Chassis #4888
The star of this year’s event is the Type 35B chassis #4888, a car with a rich and fascinating history. Originally ordered in 1926 by Dutch lawyer Dr. Johannes Last, this vehicle was delivered in full Grand Prix trim. It was complete with road-use adaptations like lights and stowage space. Despite its racing pedigree, Last never raced the car, and it passed through several owners before undergoing a meticulous restoration to preserve its originality.
Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet by Saoutchik: A Masterclass in Elegance
Introduced in 1934, the Bugatti Type 57 is celebrated as one of the marque’s most versatile and popular models. With 710 units produced, it came in various forms, from saloons to the more exotic cabriolets. Powered by a 3.3-litre, eight-cylinder engine, the Type 57 was evidence of Bugatti’s commitment to advanced engineering and luxurious design.
A Pebble Beach Winner
One of the highlights of the Salon Privé is the stunning Type 57 Cabriolet by Saoutchik, chassis #57735. A sumptuous car with a storied past, having won the prestigious Best in Show at the 1985 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Originally bodied by the renowned coachbuilder Saoutchik, this two-door, four-seat cabriolet boasts rakish lines and exquisite proportions that continue to captivate audiences today.
A Journey Across Continents
After its initial years in France, the Type 57 made its way to the United States, where it changed hands several times before undergoing a full restoration in the 1980s. The car’s remarkable journey and its continued preservation are proof of the enduring appeal of Bugatti’s craftsmanship.
A Must-See Event for Bugatti Enthusiasts
Other Notable Entries
In addition to the Type 35B and Type 57, the Salon Privé will feature other rare and exceptional Bugatti models.
