Suzuki SJ Stuns as UK’s No.1 Classic Christmas Dream Car

Classic car insurance experts, Footman James has revealed the festive fantasy motor that classic owners would most love to find on their driveway on Christmas morning, and the top choice is far more unconventional than anyone expected.
Taking the number one spot was the Suzuki SJ (28%). Despite its humble roots, the rugged, boxy off roader topped the Footman James Christmas wish list, showing that classic fans aren’t just dreaming of supercars and six-figure icons, some simply want a playful classic that is about enjoyment and adventure.
In second place, the red 1959 Chevy Impala (22%), brought a dose of American nostalgia, chrome and tailfin glamour to the festive garage, while the Mercedes Pagoda (18%) secured third, with its timeless elegance and continental charm.
Flying the flag for Britain, the Jaguar V12 E-Type Convertible (16%) landed in fourth place, proving the Jaguar’s enduring status as one of the most desirable homegrown classics ever built.
Rounding out the Top 5, but notably not taking the crown, was the Porsche 911 (10%), still admired, still iconic, but surprisingly outpaced by more unexpected choices this Christmas.
Daniel Beorby, Head of Product at Footman James, said:
“The Suzuki SJ topping Festive Wishlist was a brilliant surprise, and highlights that passion, personality and nostalgia often outweigh price tags and prestige in the classic community.”
Top 5 Dream Cars to Wake Up to on Christmas Day
1. Suzuki SJ – 28%
2. Red 1959 Chevy Impala – 22%
3. Mercedes Pagoda – 18%
4. V12 E-Type Convertible – 16%
5. Porsche 911 – 10%

Just outside the Top 5 were three niche favourites that made up the remaining 6% of votes. The BMW E9 3.0 CSL (3%), known as the ‘Batmobile’, continued to command respect among motorsport purists, while the Renault Dauphine (2%) proved there’s still affection for small French classics. The 2025 VW Polo Life received (1%), suggesting enthusiasts are already banking on a ‘future classic.’
The Suzuki SJ topping the chart signals a fascinating shift in classic car sentiment heading into 2026. Rather than chasing prestige badges or sky-high values, classic enthusiasts appear increasingly drawn to vehicles that offer character, capability and fun over flash. Affordable, usable classics, especially those with cult followings, seem to be gaining traction among a new generation of owners who value experience and adventure more than investment potential.
This result hints at a broader trend: the rise of ‘enjoyment-first’ classics. Cars like the SJ are simple, rugged and easy to tinker with, making them appealing to enthusiasts who want to drive, explore and get hands-on, rather than polish a museum piece.
As the classic world heads into the festive season, one thing is clear: for enthusiasts, the ultimate Christmas gift isn’t wrapped under the tree, it’s waiting on the driveway.
