Why The AGTZ Twin Tail Is The Most Exciting Coachbuilt Car Of 2025

One year after its announcement, the AGTZ Twin Tail has made its world debut in full production form at Rétromobile 2025 in Paris. As a result of a collaboration between collector car dealer La Squadra and the legendary Italian coachbuilder Atelier Zagato, this exclusive model blends heritage with cutting-edge design.

Inspired by the iconic A220 of the late 1960s, the AGTZ Twin Tail pays homage to a bold motorsport decision. The A220 originally featured a long, aerodynamic tail designed for the high-speed straights of Le Mans. However, its creators later opted for a more compact, agile form, making it a formidable hill climb contender. Now, over half a century later, that spirit lives on in a modern collector’s car with a unique removable tail section.

The Ultimate Dual-Purpose Design

At the heart of the AGTZ Twin Tail lies its most distinctive feature: a fully interchangeable rear body section. Not only that, but owners can switch between the Long Tail and Short Tail configurations in minutes. Even better, the removed tail isn’t just an accessory – it transforms into a display-worthy piece of automotive art.

Built on the underpinnings of the current Alpine A110, the AGTZ Twin Tail seamlessly merges modern engineering with classic aesthetics. Each example is hand-crafted at Atelier Zagato’s Milanese workshop, maintaining the company’s legacy of exceptional coachbuilding since 1919. With only 19 units being produced, exclusivity is guaranteed.

AGTZ Twin Tail Commission #3: A Personalised Masterpiece

The first completed customer car, known as Commission #3, finally made its grand entrance at Rétromobile. Meanwhile, each AGTZ Twin Tail undergoes a meticulous customisation process, with owners actively playing a key role in shaping their car’s final specification.

Commission #3 takes inspiration from a late-production A220, chassis #1736, which competed at the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sporting an aerodynamically sculpted nose, prominent rear-mounted radiators, and mechanical upgrades, the original car showed great promise before an untimely retirement. Now, its spirit is reborn in a modern reimagination.

Finished in a striking livery reminiscent of the 1969 Le Mans racer, Commission #3 captures the golden era of motorsport while embracing contemporary craftsmanship. Bespoke wheels and other one-off design elements make this a true collector’s dream.

Celebrating its 49th edition, Rétromobile remains one of the world’s premier classic and collector car events. The unveiling of the first AGTZ Twin Tail client car at this prestigious show highlights the project’s status in the high-end automotive world. It also strengthens La Squadra’s position on the global collector car scene.

With the first customer car delivered, work at Atelier Zagato is already progressing on the next commissions. The build slots are filling quickly, and only a few remain available for collectors looking to secure a piece of automotive history.
