Inside the Stunning Rolls-Royce Phantom Hummingbird: A Rare Bespoke Masterpiece

Rolls-Royce has revealed the Phantom Hummingbird, a highly personal Phantom Extended Private Commission created through Private Office Dubai.

The bespoke model celebrates the beauty of nature through colour, craftsmanship and intricate materials. It was commissioned as a tribute to a client’s wife and takes inspiration from the hummingbird.

The tiny bird represents joy, resilience and the ability to appreciate beauty in everyday life. Those ideas have shaped almost every detail of this remarkable Rolls-Royce.

However, one feature immediately stands out. The Phantom Hummingbird is the first Rolls-Royce to use abalone shell in its marquetry.

Abalone Shell Brings the Hummingbird to Life

Abalone shell is prized for its natural iridescence. Its inner surface, known as nacre, produces a striking blue-green shine as it catches the light.

Rolls-Royce combines the material with mother-of-pearl to recreate the changing colours of a hummingbird’s feathers.

The effect reflects how real hummingbirds produce their vivid colours. Tiny structures within their feathers reflect and split light, creating different flashes of colour as the viewing angle changes.

A hand-painted hummingbird also appears on the exterior Coachline. It creates a visual link between the car’s exterior and its highly detailed cabin.

Nine Months of Bespoke Craftsmanship

Creating the marquetry presented Rolls-Royce with a completely new challenge.

The work took more than nine months. During that time, the Bespoke Collective had to develop a suitable way to handle the unusually thin and fragile abalone shell.

The designers, engineers and craftspeople tested different approaches before finding the right technique.

In total, six iterations were needed before the team achieved the required result.

The finished design features two separate compositions:

  • Each Picnic Table features a hummingbird made from 53 pieces of abalone shell and mother-of-pearl.
  • The hummingbird’s wings contain 18 individual pieces.
  • The Rear Waterfall panel contains a botanical design made from 84 pieces.

The level of precision involved is extraordinary.

Each piece is laser-cut 0.06mm larger than its final dimensions. Craftspeople then file every fragment by hand to achieve its exact shape.

They carefully work each edge until neighbouring pieces meet without a visible seam. This level of accuracy proves particularly important around the hummingbird’s delicate wings.

45 Hours to Complete Three Panels

The craftsmanship for the Phantom Hummingbird does not end once the individual pieces have been cut.

The abalone shell and mother-of-pearl must first be reduced in thickness. The craftspeople can then place each fragment securely without damaging the delicate material.

Once fitted, the panels receive lacquer to help protect the finished surfaces.

Each Picnic Table and the Rear Waterfall panel required another eight hours of work after cutting and fitting.

Together, the three panels took 45 hours to complete.

That combination of traditional handcraft and modern production techniques gives the Phantom Hummingbird its distinctive character.

A Cabin Shaped by Natural Colours

Rolls-Royce has selected the interior colours to complement the abalone marquetry.

Ash Burr veneer provides the background for all three marquetry panels. Silver Birch also features within the Picnic Table designs.

The Silver Birch comes from a single log. Rolls-Royce selected and examined it closely to ensure its grain worked with the overall composition.

Meanwhile, the seats feature Creme Light leather with Moccasin and Tan detailing.

Seashell carpets add another natural shade, while the Starlight Headliner completes the cabin’s luxurious atmosphere.

A Two-Tone Exterior Completes the Design

The nature-inspired theme continues outside the car.

The lower body wears Wildberry, while the upper section uses White Sands. A hand-applied White Sands Coachline separates the two colours.

A hummingbird appears within the Coachline, seemingly flying along the length of the Phantom.

As a result, the exterior and interior tell the same story. The colours, materials and artwork all connect back to the hummingbird and the natural world.

A Rolls-Royce Built Around Personal Expression

The Phantom Hummingbird shows what happens when a bespoke commission goes far beyond choosing colours and materials.

Rolls-Royce had to develop a new approach to abalone shell while maintaining the level of finish expected from its Bespoke creations.

The result combines painstaking handcraft with a deeply personal theme.
