Toyota GR GT Could Be the Most Exciting V8 Supercar of the Decade

If you thought Toyota’s performance story peaked with the legendary 2000GT or the unforgettable Lexus LFA, think again. The Japanese giant is preparing to launch its most ambitious road car yet – the all-new Toyota GR GT. Arriving in 2027, this is much more than just another fast coupe. In fact, it’s a genuine supercar developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing. It brings together cutting-edge hybrid technology, motorsport engineering and a glorious twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

For enthusiasts, this could well be one of the most exciting performance car launches of the decade.

A True Halo Car

Toyota has spent the past few years rebuilding its sporting credentials with cars like the GR Yaris, GR Corolla and GR Supra. The GR GT sits proudly above them all. Moreover, it acts as the flagship of the Gazoo Racing range and serves as the road-going sibling to Toyota’s GT3 race car.

Unlike many manufacturers that develop a race car from a road model, Toyota has worked in reverse. Specifically, they created the two cars side by side. The result promises genuine race-bred engineering rather than simply aggressive styling.

Its dramatic long bonnet, low roofline and wide stance leave no doubt that this machine means business.

Hybrid V8 Power

At the heart of the GR GT lies an all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 paired with a single electric motor in a hybrid system. Toyota is targeting more than 650PS (around 641bhp) and over 850Nm of torque. This makes it comfortably the most powerful production Toyota ever built. (GAZOO Racing)

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a newly developed eight-speed automatic transaxle. Subsequently, this helps achieve ideal weight distribution and razor-sharp handling.

Toyota is aiming for:

  • 650+ PS (641bhp+)
  • Over 850Nm of torque
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Top speed exceeding 320km/h (around 200mph)
  • 0-62mph in approximately 3.5 seconds

Perhaps most excitingly, Toyota says considerable effort has gone into ensuring the V8 delivers an emotional soundtrack—a welcome reminder that performance is about far more than numbers. (GAZOO Racing)

Price and Exclusivity

Toyota hasn’t officially confirmed UK pricing. However, industry estimates suggest the GR GT will cost somewhere between £170,000 and £220,000 depending on specification and market. In the United States, expectations are for a starting price above $225,000. Additionally, some analysts predict the price could be close to $300,000. (Autoblog)

That might seem extraordinary for a Toyota, but this isn’t an ordinary Toyota.

In fact, the company is expected to sell the GR GT in very limited numbers. Buyers are likely to undergo an approval process similar to Ferrari and Ford’s GT allocation programmes. Toyota hasn’t announced production figures. Nevertheless, everything points towards an extremely exclusive model that could become highly collectible from day one.

Inspired by Legends

The GR GT has some incredibly big shoes to fill.

The Toyota 2000GT became one of Japan’s first true supercars, while the Lexus LFA remains one of the greatest naturally aspirated performance cars ever created. Rather than trying to copy either icon, the GR GT looks determined to write its own chapter.

With lightweight aluminium construction and advanced aerodynamics developed alongside Toyota’s endurance racing programme, the GR GT is impressive. Furthermore, a motorsport-derived hybrid drivetrain represents everything Gazoo Racing has learned from competing at Le Mans and in the World Endurance Championship. (GAZOO Racing)

Final Thoughts

It’s rare that a completely new supercar arrives from a manufacturer with such rich motorsport heritage. Yet the company has so much still to prove in this exclusive segment.

The Toyota GR GT promises stunning looks, a charismatic twin-turbo V8 and genuine racing pedigree. It also boasts enough performance to challenge Europe’s established elite. If Toyota delivers on its ambitious targets, the GR GT won’t simply be another halo model. Instead, it could become one of the defining Japanese performance cars of the modern era.

For petrolheads everywhere, 2027 suddenly can’t come soon enough.
