The Hidden Costs of Cutting Corners on Collision Repairs

Being frugal is a virtue. Why pay full price on over-the-counter allergy medicine when the store brand has the same ingredients for a few dollars less? Why eat out or order multiple times a week when you can buy fresh ingredients and prepare a meal yourself? It saves money, and it’s probably healthier.

And why pay for a collision repair if you can repair your vehicle yourself? Well, if you can fix your vehicle yourself, that’s great. But that’s not always possible, even for avid car enthusiasts. So, sometimes you should just find the most affordable local repair shop … or should you?

Collision repair costs

Nobody likes spending money on auto repair and maintenance. We don’t like spending money on insurance or taxes either, but we do it because it’s necessary. Auto repair is one of these necessary expenditures, too. But because we don’t get something flashy from it, like an expensive watch, a fancy tablet, or a vacation, we really resent paying more than we have to.

But what should auto repair cost? The answer, of course, is “it depends.” But what if a friend tells you they’ve been going to an auto body shop and the services they get are a little cheaper than what you’ve been paying? Well, then maybe this other shop is worth a visit.

But what if it’s a lot cheaper than what you’ve been paying? At this point, alarm bells should be ringing. Either your current auto body shop is grossly overcharging you, or this other auto repair centre is cutting corners to cut down costs. Unfortunately, in the collision repair industry, either could be true. So how do you know?

Signs an auto body shop is cutting corners

Here are some telltale signs that a collision repair business is doing shoddy or incomplete work to save a few dollars:

Pressure to skip steps

Sometimes, a shop’s corner-cutting is evident even before they perform a collision repair. If auto repair technicians suggest skipping a calibration, declining a scan, or “not worrying about” a structural measurement to save money, that’s a red flag. Modern auto repair is a procedure-driven process; skipping steps leads to voided warranties, breakdowns, and collisions.

Poor panel alignment and uneven gaps

After a collision repair, body panels should sit flush and evenly spaced. If doors, the hood, or the trunk have inconsistent gaps, stick out slightly, or require extra force to close, this suggests rushed structural or mounting work. This can have wide-ranging effects, from a loss of aerodynamics and mileage to loud noise from air getting in, to compromised structural integrity.

Paint mismatch

Automotive paint matching should be far more precise than eyeballing the colours. When shops cut corners, they often don’t finish repairs with the right paint. What looks good in the shop can, in better light, look slightly darker, lighter, or appear to have different metallic flake distribution. This can happen when auto repair technicians don’t match or blend the paint properly.

Warning sights or ADAS malfunctions

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) make half-assed collision repair stand out more than ever. If dashboard warning lights appear after a repair, especially for ADAS features like lane assistance, blind spot monitoring, or collision avoidance, that’s a serious red flag. An auto body shop that skips post-repair scanning and calibration may be cutting costs at the expense of safety.

Unusual noises or driving changes

Not all signs of poor collision repair are visual. Pay attention to how your vehicle sounds and feels. Rattling sounds, wind noise, vibration, pulling to one side, or steering that feels off can indicate improper reassembly or incomplete structural repair. After bodywork, your vehicle should drive exactly as it did before.

Missing documentation

A reputable auto body shop should provide an itemized invoice and be willing to explain what the technicians repaired, replaced, calibrated, or scanned. If the shop avoids giving details about procedures, parts, or calibration reports, that’s a big warning sign.

Cheap or incorrect parts

If replacement parts don’t fit quite right or lack manufacturer branding when the auto body shop promised OEM parts, this is concerning. Some aftermarket parts are perfectly acceptable, but transparency matters. If you weren’t told, that’s the issue.

Rust protection and undercoating gaps

After structural or panel replacement, auto repair techs must restore corrosion protection. If weld areas, seams, or inner panels look bare or poorly sealed, long-term rust issues could follow. This is especially true for locations that feature road salt and humidity, which is much of Canada.

Is cutting corners really bad?

A collision repair business can save a lot of money by doing a less-than-professional job. And it might seem like this will save you, the driver, money as well. After all, they’re charging less. But there are real costs to shoddy auto repair.

As hinted above, a cheap repair today leads to more repairs in the future. And not just repairs, but potentially more collisions. Apart from imperiling your safety, an unprofessional auto body shop might void a manufacturer’s warranty, which could cost you much more in the future. Trusting a reputable collision repair shop is the wise decision in the long run.

But how can you tell if an auto body shop is worthy of your business? Look for these signs:

● They can clearly explain the repair process.

● They discuss scanning and ADAS calibration up front.

● They provide written estimates and detailed documentation.

● The facility looks organized and clean.

● They stand behind their work with a warranty.

● They have certifications.

● They don’t compete only on price

If you can find a local repair shop with some or all the above qualities, you can trust the auto repair services they provide.
