Powerful Reasons To Experience The Silverstone Festival’s F1 Anniversary Spectacle

Next month, Silverstone will celebrate a landmark anniversary. Seventy-five years ago, on 13 May 1950, the Northamptonshire circuit hosted the world’s very first official FIA Formula One World Championship Grand Prix. It was a historic moment for motorsport. But at the time, few realised just how significant it would become.

To mark the occasion, Silverstone Festival 2025 (22–24 August) is pulling out all the stops. From iconic race cars to royal connections, thrilling retro racing to family-friendly fun, this year’s festival promises something truly special.

Where It All Began: Silverstone 1950

1. Silverstone 1950

Back in 1950, the world was still recovering from the aftermath of war. Yet motor racing was entering a new era. The FIA’s new World Championship introduced a standardised points system, awarding scores to the top five finishers: 8 for first place, 6 for second, then 4, 3, and 2. An extra point was also given for the fastest lap.

Only a driver’s best four results counted, and whoever scored highest became the World Drivers’ Champion.

Seven races made up the inaugural calendar – from Silverstone to Monaco, Spa to Monza, with a detour to the USA for the Indianapolis 500. But it all began on a sunlit Saturday in May, right here in Britain.

A Royal Seal of Approval

2. Silverstone 1950

The 1950 British Grand Prix wasn’t just a sporting debut – it was a full-blown national event. It carried the title Grand Prix d’Europe, giving it added prestige. Most remarkably, it became the only Grand Prix ever attended by a reigning British monarch.

King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, and the Mountbattens were all there. A royal box was built especially for them. Drivers were introduced to the royal family before the race began – a true moment of pageantry and pride for British motorsport.

Noble Drivers, Mighty Machines

The entry list was equally high-profile. Of the 21 drivers, two held aristocratic titles: Prince Bira of Siam, and Baron Emmanuel de Graffenried, who had won the 1949 British Grand Prix.

Ferrari chose not to attend. That left Alfa Romeo to dominate, fielding four of their supercharged 158s. Three went to F1 legends Juan Manuel Fangio, Nino Farina and Luigi Fagioli. The fourth was handed to Britain’s own Reg Parnell, who repaid their faith with a podium finish.

In front of more than 150,000 spectators, Fangio retired with engine trouble. Farina won the race, earning £500 and maximum points. By the season’s end, he became the very first Formula 1 World Champion.

From Silverstone to the World Stage

4. FIA Formula One World Championship Grand Prix 1950

Fast forward 75 years and Formula One is now a global phenomenon. From the glitz of Monaco to the skyscrapers of Singapore, it captivates millions. Yet it all began at Silverstone.

To celebrate this remarkable journey, Silverstone Festival 2025 will unveil a World Champions Collection – the first of its kind. This unique display will bring together cars raced by all 34 World Drivers’ Champions, from Alfa Romeo through to Red Bull.

Nick Wigley, Event Director of Silverstone Festival, calls it “a hugely historic milestone,” and rightly so. Nowhere else could host such a tribute. This is the spiritual home of F1.

Racing Through Time

The Festival isn’t just about looking back. It’s about reliving the past with the same roar, speed and spectacle.

This year’s retro racecard will feature four classic Grand Prix events, showcasing cars from F1’s golden years. Plus, there’s a very special race for 500cc Formula 3 cars, honouring the same support race that accompanied the 1950 event.

Over 60 entries have already been confirmed. The full grid will host 54 motorcycle-engined machines from across the world. Expect noise, thrills and wheel-to-wheel action as these featherweight racers tear around the historic circuit once again.

Family Fun and Festival Vibes
