My Amazing Experience With DTO Motorsport. Petrolhead Nirvana.

I thought I’d tell you about my DTO Motorsport afternoon experience at Donington Park racing circuit.

I came across DTO just by chance, on my Instagram feed, which obviously tracks my interests, so a DTO post popped up. Some emails backwards and forwards led to me spending an afternoon with the DTO motorsport team at Donington Park racing circuit. Let me tell you all about the experience and if like me you love your motorsport your supercars and you’re driving then this could be a great experience for you.

Who are DTO motorsport?

DTO Motorsport offers a motorsport-infused on-track driving experience with a fleet of sports, super, and racing cars. They cater to novices and track-day regulars alike, offering expert coaching from active racing drivers.

My First Drive: McLaren 570 GT4 Racing Car

The first car I drove was the McLaren 570 GT4 racing car on slicks. There’s nothing quite like jumping in at the deep end as they say. What a car this is. Although I should’ve performed my fastest lap time of the day I didn’t. The car is glued to the road as it was on slicks and has very good aerodynamics. I didn’t feel out of control any point. And this was one of my favourite drives of the day.

Second Drive: BMW M2 CS Racing

Second car I drove was the name BMW M2 CS Racing, which is a fully homologated race car and DTO have the only vehicles in the UK. This car is a completely different beast to the McLaren. This car is like a DTM/touring car. Lots of power, lots of grip, lots of noise. This car was lots of fun to drive. According to the driver coaches. If you’re on it, then this car would be about four seconds of laps lower than McLaren. From memory, I think I went to seconds quicker. However, I’ve put that down two more laps more confidence and just getting my lines more accurate.

Coaching with Experienced Racing Drivers

Each car that you drive you have a very experienced racing driver coach who is giving you useful instructions whilst driving to improve your driving style and your lap times. My instructor Ryan was very good, helpful, complimentary, and I would highly recommend. The assigned driver coach works with you for the entire afternoon, morning, or day, regardless of the session you’re participating in.

The Passenger Experience: Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Following on from my drive in the BMW M2 CS Racing, I was then taken on a passenger experience of several hot laps in a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. I’m not a great fan of being a passenger, I’d rather be doing the driving, however, this was very useful to improve my driving further, understanding the racing lines to breaking points, and how much speed you can take into the corners. The caveat here is that obviously each car that you drive has slightly different characteristics, speed, acceleration, and breaking abilities.

Final Drive: Porsche Cayman GT

Next car up, I might last for the day was the Porsche Cayman GT. This was the first car that I drove that was a normal road tires and not slicks. Still a fast car and very enjoyable to drive, but the car was more twitchy than the BMW that was more twitchy than the McLaren. And at one point the instructor just grabbed the steering wheel slightly at 100 miles an hour as he thought I was going to lose the backend. I assured him I was in control. As the Great Sir, Stirling Moss, once said: “If everything is under control you are just not driving fast enough.”

The last car that I would’ve driven was a BMW114. Four so I didn’t get time to drive that for one reason or another and but that was no worries. As for me I was a guest for the day on and just experiencing what DTO motorsport is all about, so I can let you are readers know what I think, and a rundown of the experience itself.

Telemetry and Data Analysis

In the half-day session, telemetry, G-forces, lap times, and other statistics recorded all of my driving to help me and my driver coach monitor my driving style and identify areas for improvement. I also think this is a very nice keepsake From your experience. Here’s a few screenshots below.

How much does it cost to take part in a DTO Drive motorsport day?

Standard price (per person): £1950 (1/2 day), or Full day: £2950

The DTO Drive experience day will include eight people in the morning and eight people in the afternoon with lunch in the middle. IF you are taking part in a full day then you will be one of the eight in both the morning and afternoon.

The options DTO can provide include:

DTO Drive which is what I did. This is their motorsport infused on track driving experience which will get you the behind the wheel of their incredible fleet of sports, super and racing cars on some of the best circuits in the UK and Europe, with expert coaching from active current competing racing drivers and superb hospitality provided throughout. Suitable for novices with zero experience and regular track day visitors alike, their events can accommodate private individuals, small groups of friends or larger parties of up to 20.

The Race Edit is their more focussed programme which is designed to allow you to really optimise your driving skills to enhance overall performance whilst out on the track. Taking place over a full day (as opposed to the 5 hours of DTO Drive), The Race Edit is normally carried out in one of the racing cars from their fleet (BMW M2 CS Racing or McLaren 570S GT4) and will include 5-6 drive sessions with your personal racing driver coach as well as data/telemetry sessions after each stint on track (to review progress).

DTO Racing – BMW 116 Trophy is the entry level championship that they have clients competing in as their starting point into the world of competitive motorsport. This is a full programme that includes each and every single aspect that you will need to content with in order to not only get onto the grid, but hopefully be competitive allowing you to aim to achieve proper results as the season goes on, all whilst having fun as a part of the process!

DTO operate from circuits ranging from Brands Hatch, through to Goodwood, Silverstone and Donington Park with an international offering taking place later this year (2023) at the legendary Spa Francorchamps.

My Final Thoughts on DTO Motorsport

So what is my final thoughts on my day at DTO motorsport? Although to most people, the cost may seem prohibitive or high, depending on your financial status, but motorsports is expensive, there is no getting away from that, and for me personally I get no satisfaction or value from doing a red letter day. For me to get true value for money and your time, you want (well I want) a half or full day experience, a good amount of track time, and DTO Motorsport deliver this. A wonderful time had.

For me, my experience got a double thumbs up (that’s very good) and I will 100% be doing this again in the future. That should tell you all you need to know.
