Golf 7 listing. Which engine version is the best buy?

Since its launch in 1974, the Golf has attracted millions of motorists. Today, it remains a highly sought-after vehicle for its qualities and performance. But the Golf 7 listing is quite wide, especially in terms of engine capabilities. Which version should you choose? Let’s talk about it.

Golf 7 listing and a driving style

Volkswagen Golf 7 can be chosen based on its engine, which directly corresponds with a particular way of driving. Your needs, the nature of journeys, and the annual mileage will help you find the model that best suits your driving style. Below are some interesting comparisons.

A petrol Golf 7 for urban use:

  • The 1.2/1.0 TSI 85 hp engine: is very suitable for urban driving.
  • The 1.2TSI105/110 hp engine: more powerful than the previous version, it is appreciated for its fuel efficiency.
  • The 1.0 TSI 115 hp engine: is more powerful and less economical.
  • The 1.4 TSI 125 hp engine can reach 204 km/h on the road and meets all general needs quite well.
  • The 1.4 TSI 140/150 hp engine: equipped with the ACT system, it has a more balanced consumption than the 125 hp version with the Activation Cylinder Technology system.
  • The 1.5TSI EVO 130/150 hp: the latest engine fitted to the Golf 7, it offers the advantages of a 6-speed manual gearbox.

A diesel Golf 7 for long journeys:

  • The 1.6TDI engine with 90, 110, and 115 hp is the most popular for both a long trip and a city.
  • The 2.0 TDI 150 hp engine: the brand’s latest innovations have made this version famous. It is an excellent road car, economical and efficient.
  • The 2.0 TDI 184 hp engine: the most powerful version of the Golf 7 has the same characteristics as the 150 hp version and is very attractive for its performance.

A Golf 7 Hybrid to Save Fuel

Electric vehicles are indeed very fuel-efficient. Hybrid models incorporate this feature quite well, especially in the urban environment. The Golf 7 Hybrid is the first plug-in vehicle developed by Volkswagen. It went on sale in 2014 and features a number of new equipment and technical improvements. This option is a “green” alternative to more traditional engine designs mentioned earlier. Hybrid technology is also quieter, which can be a plus for those who tend to use car speakers often.

The Golf GTE is a variant with some aesthetic changes such as a double exhaust and a roof spoiler. The GTE is powered by a 1.4-litre 150 hp TSI four-cylinder petrol engine and a 102 hp electric motor controlled by a six-speed automatic gearbox. The range in fully electric mode is 50 km. The lithium battery can be recharged in at least 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Golf 7 Hybrid does not have an accelerated charging mode.

Summary

Overall, the Golf 7 is an excellent car. Depending on your needs, we can recommend the 1.4-litre 125bhp engine, which is a good choice among entry-level Golfs. Those looking for a slightly more powerful car should opt for the 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine. For those who prefer diesel and are long-distance drivers, we recommend the 2-litre 150bhp and the 2-litre TDY in the GTD (184bhp).

A hybrid version is something that works best in the London area, for example. 50 km range is not that impressive, by today’s standards. But it is still the most eco-friendly engine option from the whole Golf 7 listing available. In any case, consider your needs and driving style before deciding on a particular model.
