Our Top 10 Cars at the Silverstone Festival Iconic Auction 2024

Here is our top 10 cars that I desire that were for sale at the Silverstone Festival Iconic Auction 2024. It was very hard to limit to just 10 cars, but I think I was thereabouts. It’s hard when you love cars as much as I do to limit it to just 10 when they must’ve had around 120-150 cars for sale. 

So here we go, in no particular order of preference.

The auctioneer at Silverstone Festival was Iconic auctioneers, which it has been for many years now. The estimate estimate prices quoted here then include a 12.5% (which in essence is the iconic auction is profit) plus VAT premium. So in summary to keep it simple,whatever the sale price in the auction room, you add 15% to give the total due.  So £100k sale = £115k for the buyer. It’s rarely a cheap deal to be had at an auction. So the cars that caught my eye:

1977 Porsche 911 3.0 Carrera sport coupe-“garage find“

The auctioneer says “A rare and sought after right-hand drive UK 3-litre Carrera Sport model with long family ownership – lots of potential!”

For me, I think that’s a ridiculous amount of money. This car needs a complete body restoration including rubbers (trim). I imagine it would cost £50,000 to £100,000 to actually put it right. What do you think? If you are a Porsche expert, you’ll know better than I.

1962 Lancia appear GT-coachwork by Zagato

The auctioneer says “Second series Zagato-bodied Appia GTE with European Rally Provenance now in need of a full restoration.”

No odometer reading mentioned. This would be a very cool project for someone. I was tempted, as I really do want a Zagato at some point. However, the amount of work that would need to be done, the difficulty sourcing parts. It really would be a labor of love, and I don’t believe you’d ever make your money back. So for me, a non-starter to purchase.

Price estimate: £28-34,000.

1986 BMW M635 CSI (E24)

The auctioneer says “Four seats, gorgeous looks and 286bhp, the M635 CSi embodied the ultimate symbiosis of luxury and high-performance in the mid-1980s.”

Very cool, looking car, and in my opinion, one of the nicest looking BMWs. It’s quite a bit of money though. For me it’s a £20-30k carat the most, for my wallet.

Price estimate £50,000 to £60,000. Ouch.

1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda (W113), with Hardtop

The auctioneer says “Fully restored and exceptionally well presented, this impressive, left-hand drive, 2.8-litre Pagoda has benefitted from significant expenditure during current ownership.”

Odometer reading, undisclosed, however, read 28,928

Price estimate: £90,000 to £110,000.  Wow. Th’at some price for these Pagodas.

2000 Subaru Impreza P1

The auctioneer says “This Subaru Impreza P1 is undoubtedly JDM ‘royal family’ and this UK supplied example has been fastidiously maintained and remains in delightful standard condition.” 

My only concern with buying any car like this is… has someone absolutely ragged it? Probably.

1973 BMW ‘CSL Batmobile’ 3.5-litre FIA

The auctioneer says “The vendor decided to create the best FIA ‘Group 2’ CSL ‘Batmobile’ he could and result is simply remarkable.”

Love the car, the colour scheme and look. However, I do not love the price, but someone did as this car sold.

No odometer reading, as it doesn’t have an odometer.

1972 Porsche 911 E (OEL KLAPPE)

The auctioneer says ”an attractive example of the rare, 1972 model year-only, side oil-fill 911E with a great color combination.”  I have to agree. I do love the color of the car although the cloth interior is not for me.  Is it reasonable money?

2004 Lamborghini Murcielago, Manual

The auctioneer says “A UK supplied, right hand drive example equipped with a ran so I will gated, six speed, manual gearbox.”

Odometer reading: 59,346

1980 Porsche 924 Turbo 

The auctioneer says “Porsche Center, Bournemouth’s entry for Porsche UK’s 2016, main dealer only, restoration competition, and the finest example we have seen.” 

I have to say I do really like this car. I like the interior seats which have that brown checkered effect which I think may have been popular for the time, and is a retro look now. At the time of writing I would predict this car would definitely go for estimate or more. Great car to have in your collection. And it must overtime appreciate. This would be my top buy. Condition is impeccable.

One of my favorite cars for sale here and a car I do pine after. In my opinion this car is so much nicer looking than the Pagoda. What do you think?

1956 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL roadster (RHD)

The auctioneer says, “an original UK right hand drive, manual gearbox 190 SL fully rebuilt from a bear shell and superbly finished in opalescent blue.”

Odometer reading 3238 miles. I’m assuming that’s miles as RHD, but maybe kilometres.  Again I assume those miles are covered since it was fully rebuilt.

Price estimate £85,000 to £100,000

Hundred percent I am very tempted to buy this. It is a car on my wish list, as one of the cars I would love to own.  In this blue silver, with red leather and RHD. Beautiful.

2001 Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 SC coupe

Car number 94, 564 miles from new. The auctioneer says “The last-of-the-line Diablos, a rare factory Special Edition benefiting from all the upgrades, a 205mph capability and all the theatre you’d want from Sant’ Agata’s finest.”

I say, WOW, love the color, but that’s one hell of a lot of money. It’s also a crime that someone has had a car like that in their collection and has not driven it hardly at all. Shame on you. But maybe that is the point, hardly driven, so the car gets a massive premium.

Odometer reading: 564 miles 

Price estimate: £400,000 to £500,000 pounds. Ouch however this is new as it gets.

1994 Ferrari 512 TR ABS

The auctioneer says “One of the most seriously underrated Ferraris of their analogue era. UK-supplied, 1 of 38 ABS models, Classiche certified, immaculate condition and an exemplary history file.”  It is in mint condition for sure.

Price estimate £150,000 to £180,000

1923 Bentley 3/4 on a quarter supercharged two-seater

The auctioneer says “An exquisitely finished Sports Racing Bentley, built in the Bentley Boys idiom, using original chassis #216 mated to an engine built around the crankcase SM3906.”

No odometer reading. It says 52. But I assume that’s the mileage from when it was rebuilt.

We can see that of the cars I selected, 4 of the 13 cars did not sell, that’s 31%.  Also many of the cars were bought nearer the low estimate, rather than the high estimate.  For me, many classic cars are expensive and it’s unlikely that you’ll make money on them when you sell, so it’s imperative that you buy a car you love and you’ll use.
