MG Centenary to be Celebrated at Festival of Speed 2024

Mark your calendars on the 11th – 14th July for the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This year’s celebration is set to be a roaring tribute to a true British automotive icon – MG. The legendary marque, known for its spirited roadsters and motorsport prowess, takes the coveted central stage, headlining the prestigious Central Feature display.

For MG, 2024 is a momentous occasion, marking a century of churning out iconic cars that have captured the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide. Founded in 1922 (originally Morris Garages), MG quickly established itself as a purveyor of affordable, exhilarating sports cars. From the elegant curves of the MGA to the robust charm of the MGB. These were more than just weekend cruisers; they were serious contenders on the racetrack. MGs carved their names into motorsport history, leaving their mark on everything from touring cars to the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans.

A Legacy Etched in Rubber

The Goodwood Hill Climb holds a special place in MG’s heritage. From 1948 to 1966, MGs were a constant presence on the iconic circuit. Their nimble handling and spirited engines putting on a thrilling display. This year’s Central Feature serves as a poignant nod to that rich history. Designed by the visionary Gerry Judah, the display will be a time capsule of MG’s evolution. Taking centre stage will be the much-anticipated Cyberster – a sleek, electric roadster that promises to redefine open-air motoring. Flanking it, like a proud mentor, will be the MGB – a car that embodies the essence of MG’s golden age.

Beyond the Feature: A Celebration Unfolds

But the MG lovefest doesn’t stop at the Central Feature. The entire 2024 Festival of Speed promises to be a treasure trove of British motoring history, with MG taking centre stage. Expect to see a dazzling array of MG classics tearing up the hill. From the early, pre-war models to the iconic MGB GT V8s that ruled the tarmac in the 1970s.

A Centenary of Innovation

More than just a nostalgic nod to the past, this MG celebration aligns perfectly with the overall theme of the Festival – “Horseless to Hybrid: Revolutions in Power.” MG’s 100-year journey has exemplified the brand’s unwavering commitment to innovation. From pioneering lightweight construction and efficient engines to embracing the electric future with the Cyberster, MG has constantly pushed the boundaries.

A Duke’s Delight

The Duke of Richmond, founder of the Festival of Speed, perfectly captures the significance of MG’s presence. “MG’s 100-year history combined with their continuous drive for innovation aligns perfectly with this year’s theme,” he states. He even reminisces about his grandfather’s fascination with MGs in the 1930s, highlighting their “light weight, simplicity and clever engineering” – characteristics that continue to define the brand today.

MG’s Future: Electrifying the Open Road

The Cyberster’s inclusion in the Central Feature is a glimpse into MG’s exciting future. This electric roadster, with its sleek lines and promised exhilarating performance, represents a new chapter for the brand. It’s a clear message to the world: MG doesn’t want to bathe in the glory of its past, but rather embrace the future of motoring with open arms.

Guy Pigounakis, MG Motor UK Commercial Director, sums it up perfectly: “One hundred years ago, MG pioneered the creation of the popular sports car, turning dreams into reality for millions of enthusiasts around the world. We’re still committed to that founding vision of delivering accessible, innovative, and truly engaging cars.” The Cyberster, he believes, “underlines that commitment with a high-performance EV convertible which we hope will have the same impact as its much-loved forerunners.”
