McLaren to Make a Thumping Return to Le Mans

McLaren Automotive, the renowned British sports car manufacturer, will make a remarkable return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most prestigious endurance races in the world. Their participation in the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) marks their first time gracing the legendary Le Mans track since 1998, a comeback that is bound to thrill racing enthusiasts worldwide.

McLaren’s re-entry into the endurance racing arena will be spearheaded by their formidable 720S GT3 EVO, a car that has already proven its mettle in various competitions. The team, United Autosports, will field two of these beasts in the LMGT3 class, ready to tackle the gruelling 24-hour race with grit and determination.

This momentous comeback will be a celebration of McLaren’s rich motorsport heritage. The race numbers chosen for the two 720S GT3 EVOs, #59 and #95, hold special significance, paying tribute to McLaren’s historic Le Mans victory in 1995, with the race number 59, completing the prestigious ‘Triple Crown’ of motorsports victories.

Michael Leiters, CEO of McLaren Automotive, expressed his excitement about the team’s return to Le Mans, acknowledging the fierce competition that awaits them. He stated that the season will be very exciting and extremely close between the teams. This is why they have nominated United Autosports as their racing partner. This team has an excellent reputation in the endurance racing arena, and he eagerly anticipates their return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where they will see 720S GT3 EVO cars in action.

United Autosports, McLaren’s chosen racing partner, is no stranger to Le Mans success, having secured victory in the LMP2 class in 2020. With their proven track record and unwavering determination, they are poised to make a significant impact in the 2024 WEC.

Richard Dean, CEO of United Autosports, echoed the sentiment of pride and gratitude, recognising the significance of McLaren’s return to Le Mans. He stated that they are very proud and grateful to see the confirmation of the two WEC entries for United Autosports and McLaren. This is a show of faith from both the WEC and McLaren in their project and they are determined to repay that faith with results on track.

With McLaren’s racing pedigree, United Autosports’ expertise, and the formidable 720S GT3 EVO leading the charge, McLaren’s return to Le Mans promises to be a thrilling spectacle, one that will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the world of endurance racing.
