The Historic Winners of the Goodwood Festival of Speed Carter ‘Style et Luxe’ Design Competition
Intro and all photos.
Cartier hosts its renowned ‘Style et Luxe’ competition each year at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This is among the most coveted car design competitions in the world. The cars featured are always amazing, and there is always a very rare classic car or several to be gawped at in total awe. This competition is essentially a contest with a winner each year judged by a panel of experts, but there is no question that every car on display is a showstopper. You will no doubt see more powerful cars at the Festival of Speed, but few will come close to the rarity, beauty and intrigue of the Style et Luxe entrants.
The competition always includes an eclectic mix of cars which are judged on excellent design, including shape and detailing, rather than restored condition. Entrants from some of the most important moments in automobile history compete for several awards, including one Overall Winner Award, as judged by personalities from the creative and automotive industries.
Held on the Private Lawn at Goodwood House, this wonderful competition has been a key part of the Festival of Speed since 1995(the third year in the event’s history). In contrast to the speed and noise of the Hillclimb, the Style et Luxe area sets itself apart by being a static display, with the silent engines emphasising poise.
Each year, a different selection of expert judges choose the winner, but rather than being solely composed of figures from the automotive industry the panel draws from other arenas. Here we thought we’d compose all of the overall winning cars throughout the years. We hope you enjoy reading as much as we did putting this article together.
