The Birth of the Goodwood Festival of Speed

To commemorate this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard’s Silver Jubilee, Goodwood Road and Racing is producing 25 videos, each highlighting a favourite personal memory of the Duke of Richmond from 25 years of the ultimate summer garden party.

 

The Birth of the Goodwood Festival of Speed

To kick-start the celebrations, His Grace looks back to 1992 and the very beginnings of the Festival’s life. The Duke’s desire to bring motorsport back to the Goodwood Estate stemmed from his ambition to see the Motor Circuit reopened after it was closed by his grandfather, the 9th Duke of Richmond back in 1966, when the current Duke was only 12 years old.

With only nine months turnaround from original concept to opening day, the Festival of Speed was a roaring success, and has since gone on to grow into one of the biggest motorsport events in the world.
